How to Add a Device
Register new hardware in WorkVerge so Carlos can assign Sophie's MacBook, track it through audits, and link tickets when something breaks.
Real-world scenario
Carlos Reyes · IT Admin at Bluewave Labs
Sophie Park's MacBook Pro 14" arrived from Apple this morning. Carlos needs it in WorkVerge before she starts, assigned, labeled, and ready for the quarterly laptop audit.
Before you begin
- ITAM access to Physical Assets → Devices
- At least one inventory type (e.g. MacBook Pro 14") created under Inventory
- Workplace and employee records set up in My Organization
Overview
Adding a device creates the source-of-truth record for a physical asset. WorkVerge links it to an inventory type for filtering and stats, tracks who has it and where it sits, and feeds QR coverage, asset groups, and depreciation data. You only need name, serial, type, and status to save, fill in the rest when procurement sends the PO details.
Step-by-step
- 1
Open ITAM → Physical Assets → Devices
You'll see stat cards by type and the full device table. Confirm Sophie's serial isn't already listed before adding a duplicate.
- 2
Click Add Device
The form opens on the right. Give the device a name your team will recognize, often the model plus the assignee.
- 3
Enter the serial number
Use the manufacturer serial (e.g. C02XL9ABCD on a Mac). WorkVerge flags duplicates in the same org so two laptops can't share one serial.
- 4
Select device type from Inventory
Pick the inventory item that matches the hardware, e.g. MacBook Pro 14". Types come from your Inventory tab setup.
- 5
Set workplace and assign the employee
Choose where the device lives (SF HQ, Remote) and assign Sophie Park if she's the primary user. You can leave assignment blank for spares.
- 6
Choose status and optional details
Set Active for day-one use, or Maintenance if it's still being imaged. Add manufacturer, model, OS, tags, and purchase info when you have them.
- 7
Click Add Device
WorkVerge saves the record and it appears in the list immediately. Open the detail view next to generate a QR label.
