Onboarding Surveys
Catch friction in week one, not month three, by automatically sending short pulses when new hires join Bluewave Labs.
Real-world scenario
Priya Mehta · People Ops Lead at Bluewave Labs
Three engineers started June 2. Priya wants a week-1 pulse on June 9 asking "Do you know who to ask for help?" and "Is your dev environment ready?", before their manager 1:1 on June 12.
Before you begin
- Published onboarding or week-1 pulse survey
- Employees marked as onboarding in org records
- Onboarding settings configured
Overview
DEX onboarding orchestrates survey touchpoints across a new hire's first weeks. Pair it with org employee onboarding in My Organization so HR, IT, and People Ops share one timeline, not three Slack threads.
Week-1 pulse for June engineers
Send: Day 7 after start date · Reminder: Day 9 if incomplete
Notify: Hiring manager when score ≤ 3 on "I know who to ask for help"
Setup flow
- 1
Open DEX → Onboarding
Review active new hires and which survey touchpoints they've completed.
- 2
Link your week-1 pulse survey
Choose a published survey from Surveys, or build one focused on clarity, tools, and manager support.
- 3
Configure timing in Settings
Set when the pulse fires, typically day 5 or end of week 1, so people have context before they answer.
- 4
Connect to org onboarding
When HR marks someone as onboarding in My Organization, DEX picks up the start date and queues surveys.
- 5
Monitor completion
Watch the onboarding dashboard and nudge managers when a direct report hasn't submitted by day 8.
Settings and timing
Fine-tune triggers, default surveys, and manager notifications in Onboarding Settings. Priya sets day-1 welcome (optional), week-1 pulse (required), and 30-day checkpoint (required for engineering roles).
Don't survey on day 1
Monitor and act
The onboarding dashboard shows who completed each checkpoint. Low scores on environment setup? Loop in Carlos Reyes (IT Admin) on access issues. Vague manager support? Flag the hiring manager, not in the survey thread, in a private follow-up.
For automation beyond defaults, e.g. create an ITSM ticket when someone rates tooling 1/5, see DEX Automations.
